In 2018, the Participatory Design Conference will be held in Belgium, in a year that is characterised by municipal elections in the region. Not only on a local level are things in motion; we are facing several challenges on a global level too: growing economic and social inequalities, growing migration rates, and a rise of xenophobia, right-wing upsurge and securitarian policies.

PD researchers explore conditions for user participation in the design and introduction of computer-based systems at work. We characterize Participatory Design (PD) as a maturing area of research and as an evolving practice among design professionals. Although PD has been applied outside of technology design, here we focus on PD in relation to the introduction of computer-based systems at work. We discuss three main issues addressed by PD researchers; the politics of design; the nature of participation; and method Grudin, Jonathan and Poltrock, Steven (2003): Computer-supported cooperative work and groupware. As for motivations to improve design through user participation, participatory methods are employed in a wide variety of design contexts; Scandinavian participatory design practices are not distinguished by particular methods but rather by political Participatory Design researchers agree that it is important to involve diverse actors in the design process such as elderly with dementia, nursing home management, nursing staff etc. But when involving many different actors in designing new products, services and systems the challenge is to navigate the many perspectives and concerns of these actors, which is often conflicting and hence needs Abstract Computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) is a new multi-disciplinary field with roots in many disciplines. Due to the area's youth and diversity, few specialized books or journals are available, and articles are scattered amongst Participatory design is an approach to design strategy that brings customers into the heart of the design process. Also known as “co-creation”, “co-design”, or “cooperative design”, it emcompasses techniques useful to both initial discovery and subsequent ideation phases of a project, where the end-users of a product, service, or experience take an active role in co-designing • Participatory Design Conference. Participatory design issues and concerns in computer supported cooperative work

It is the study and theory of how people work together, and how the computer and related technologies affect group behaviour. Computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) describes coordinated activities performed by a group of participants in order to reach a common result supported by a computer system.

The term applies whether the people are collocated or remote, working at the same time or asynchronously, or trying to make a transition from one situation to the other (getting a meeting scheduled, assigning work tasks to people to do in parallel).

The distinction may be important in principle, but in practice, it has be-come an escape hatch that allows practitioners to label their work "participatory design" without being account- Participatory Design, according to Finn and Blomberg, has made no attempt to demarcate a category of work called cooperative, but instead has focused on developing cooperative strategies for system design PD is not defined by the type of work supported, nor by the technologies developed, but instead by a commitment to worker participation in design and an effort to rebalance the power Computer Supported Cooperative Work - An International Journal, vol.
